We are a group of 8 sailors from Kingston, ON from the Queen’s Sailing Team. We are partnering with Oakcliff Sailing, who will be facilitating the training program in Oyster Bay, NY and Newport, RI. They will provide coaching, room, and board to help us prepare a Farr 40 to race south, through the Atlantic.
We one of the youngest entries (U23), and one of four Canadian teams entered, in a 170 boat fleet. We are also comprised of 50% women.
The Race:
The Newport Bermuda Race (NBR) is an approx. four day, 635nm race from Newport, RI to St George, Bermuda. This is the one of the “big three” offshore races, alongside the Fastnet Race, and the Sydney Hobart Race. The NBR outdates both, first held in 1906.
We’re racing in the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse division is the highest performance division, as teams are allowed to be majority professional sailors. This attracts the fastest, and most competitive boats.
Our mission:
- Lay groundwork for the emergence of younger Canadian sailors in offshore sailing
- Compete in, and finish the Newport to Bermuda Race, in the top half of the division
We strive to challenge the status quo of the sport and inspire young sailors to “holdfast” to their skill, passion, and competitive ability.
To prepare, we will complete a training block, and a racing block both spanning around 3 weeks. We will race the AYC Spring event, Edlu Distance Race, Block Island race week, 170th Annual NYYC Regatta and complete two navigation practices offshore (60-100 nm) and race a Grade 5 Match Race regatta in the leadup to train for the race.
Donations received will help cover room, board, coaching fees, charter fees, and transportation to and from Oyster Bay, NY.
Thank you so much for your support!
